Calendly for Japan: what it can't do, and a booking page that can
Calendly is a fine tool in the United States and Europe. Run a business in Japan and, according to Calendly's own help centre, three things are missing: a Japanese booking page, Japanese public holidays, and payment in yen. Business Box is built around all three.
Start freeFree for as long as you like, no card required. Taking payment in yen is ¥1,200 a month, tax included.
Calendly in Japan: the short answer
- Japanese booking page: no. Booking pages and notifications come in English, French, Spanish, German, Dutch, Portuguese (Brazil), Italian and Ukrainian.
- Japanese public holidays: no. Automatic holiday blocking covers 10 countries, and Japan isn't one of them.
- Payment in yen: no. The Stripe and PayPal integrations accept AUD, CAD, EUR, GBP and USD only.
- Pricing: billed in US dollars, from $12 per person per month. The free plan can't take payments.
- Terms and data: Georgia (US) law, legal pages in English, data stored in the US.

Calendly has no Japanese booking page
Calendly sets one language per event type, from eight choices: English, French, Spanish, German, Dutch, Portuguese (Brazil), Italian and Ukrainian. Japanese isn't on the list. Text you write yourself, such as event names, descriptions and questions, is never translated, and Calendly notes that browser translation "cannot guarantee accuracy". (Source: How to change your event type language.)
Because the language belongs to the event type and not to the visitor, serving English and Japanese clients means duplicating every event type, and your Japanese clients still get buttons, dates and confirmation emails in a language they did not choose.
In Business Box the language follows the client. The booking page opens in English or Japanese, you write each appointment's name and description in both, and the language a client booked in is remembered, so a Japanese client keeps getting Japanese email even if your own account is in English.
Calendly doesn't block Japanese public holidays
Calendly's automatic holiday blocking covers Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, Spain, the UK and the US. Japan isn't included. The documented workaround is to add date-specific hours or an all-day busy event for each holiday yourself. (Source: How to edit holidays within Calendly.)
Japan has sixteen public holidays, they move between years, and Happy Monday legislation shifts several of them to the nearest Monday. 振替休日 appears whenever a holiday lands on a Sunday. Keeping this up by hand is how you end up taking a booking on 建国記念の日.
Turn on holiday blocking in Business Box and every Japanese public holiday is closed without you doing anything. Dates come from the Cabinet Office's own published data and refresh monthly, substitute holidays included. If you do want to work one of them, a date override opens that single day. The same data is published as a free Japanese holiday calendar.
Why a holiday calendar may not prevent bookings
Adding a public holiday calendar does not necessarily make those dates unavailable for booking. Business Box has a separate Japanese holiday setting, so you can stop bookings on public holidays without adding each date yourself.
Calendly can't take payment in Japanese yen
Calendly collects payment through Stripe or PayPal, in five currencies: Australian dollars, Canadian dollars, euros, pounds sterling and US dollars. Japanese yen isn't one of them. Refunds "must be processed manually by the account holder", and Calendly "does not calculate or collect VAT or sales tax". Payment collection is a paid-plan feature. (Sources: Calendly and Stripe, Calendly and PayPal.)
Business Box accepts payments in Japanese yen through your own Stripe account. Customer payments go directly to that account, and Business Box charges no booking commission. Stripe’s payment processing fees apply separately.
Set your prices in Japanese yen
Enter the full price in yen, such as ¥5,500. Your customer sees and pays that amount in yen.
Confirm bookings after payment
The appointment time is reserved while the customer completes payment. The booking is confirmed once payment succeeds. If payment is not completed, the time becomes available again.
Refunds follow your rules, automatically
Each appointment type carries its own cancellation policy: full refund up to a number of hours before, a partial refund after that, or none. Clients see the policy before paying, and when they cancel, the refund is worked out from that policy and issued automatically. You do not need to process each refund manually in Stripe.
Other things to know before using Calendly in Japan
- Billed in US dollars Standard is $12 per person per month ($10 billed annually), Teams $20 ($16). Accounts are billed in USD unless you are in the UK or the eurozone, and Japan isn't in Calendly's documented tax jurisdictions. Check with your accountant how that works for consumption tax and qualified invoices. (Pricing, Taxes.)
- US law, English-language arbitration The customer terms are governed by Georgia law, with Fulton County courts and arbitration in English. Legal pages are published in English only. (Customer terms.)
- Data stored in the United States Calendly stores data in US data centres; its privacy notice and DPA don't mention Japan's APPI. (Data storage.)
- No new iCloud connections, no LINE New iCloud calendar connections have not been accepted since 20 August 2024, and LINE isn't in the integrations directory. SMS reminders are sent from US numbers and may be blocked outside the US. (iCloud overview.)
Why we built Business Box
We tried Calendly first when we started taking appointments in Tokyo. The Stripe settings had no yen option, so there was no way to take a deposit from a Japanese client, and every holiday had to be blocked by hand. Business Box is the booking page we wanted: Japanese and English, yen into our own Stripe account, and 祝日 closed automatically.

Questions
Does Calendly work in Japan?
It works, with gaps. You can use it from Japan with Google or Outlook, but the booking page can't be shown in Japanese, Japanese public holidays aren't blocked automatically, and payments can't be taken in yen.
Is Calendly available in Japanese?
No. Booking pages and notifications support English, French, Spanish, German, Dutch, Portuguese (Brazil), Italian and Ukrainian.
Can Calendly block Japanese public holidays?
Not automatically. Holiday blocking covers ten countries and Japan isn't one of them, so each holiday has to be added by hand as date-specific hours or a busy event.
Can Calendly take payment in Japanese yen?
No. Its Stripe and PayPal integrations accept AUD, CAD, EUR, GBP and USD only.
Can I take payment in Japanese yen with Business Box?
Yes. Prices are set in yen and charged in yen through your own Stripe account, with no currency conversion and no commission taken by us.
Do I need a Japanese Stripe account?
To charge in yen and be paid into a Japanese bank account, yes. You connect an existing Stripe account, or create one during setup. Your Stripe dashboard, payouts and disputes stay yours.
Can my clients book in Japanese if I work in English?
Yes. Your account language and your client's are independent. The booking page, confirmations and reminders each follow the person reading them.
What does Business Box cost?
The booking page, calendar sync, availability and the embeddable widget are free, with no card and no time limit. Taking payment for bookings and inviting your staff is ¥1,200 a month, tax included, billed from the day you subscribe — one price for the whole team, with no per-seat charge. Cancel whenever you like and you drop back to the free plan rather than losing your booking page.
