Massage, bodywork and wellness
Treatment rooms billed by the hour, where turnaround time between clients is as real as the session itself. Below is how 12 of them actually set up online booking — the session length, the gap between clients, whether to take payment up front, and the one thing that trips each trade up in Japan.
Massage therapists#
Sixty and ninety minute treatments sold back to back, where the fifteen minutes of changing, showering and remaking the table is invisible to the client and very real to you.
| Duration | 60 or 90 minutes — a separate event type for each |
|---|---|
| Minimum notice | 4 hours |
| Buffer | 15 minutes after, for the room |
| Max bookings per day | Six treatments a day before the work suffers |
| Location | In person |
| Payment | Paid online — it is the single most effective thing against no-shows |
| Cancellation policy | Full refund 24 hours before, 50% inside that |
Worth asking on the booking form: First visit? · Any areas to focus on or avoid? · Pressure preference
Anma, massage and shiatsu are licensed practices in Japan while relaxation massage is not, and clients looking for English-speaking therapists usually want to know which one you are. Say it plainly in the description.
Deep tissue and remedial massage#
Clients arrive with a specific complaint rather than for relaxation, so the intake question matters more than the length.
| Duration | 60 or 90 minutes |
|---|---|
| Minimum notice | 4 hours |
| Buffer | 15 minutes after |
| Location | In person |
| Payment | Paid online |
| Cancellation policy | Full refund 24 hours before |
Worth asking on the booking form: What is bothering you? · How long has it been like that?
Thai massage#
Longer sessions than Western massage — ninety minutes and two hours are normal — on a mat rather than a table.
| Duration | 90 or 120 minutes |
|---|---|
| Minimum notice | 4 hours |
| Buffer | 15 minutes after |
| Location | In person |
| Payment | Paid online |
| Cancellation policy | Full refund 24 hours before |
Worth asking on the booking form: Have you had Thai massage before? · Any injuries or recent surgery?
Aromatherapy#
A consultation on oils precedes the treatment, so the booked hour includes time that is not hands-on.
| Duration | 75 minutes |
|---|---|
| Minimum notice | 6 hours |
| Buffer | 15 minutes after |
| Location | In person |
| Payment | Paid online |
| Cancellation policy | Full refund 24 hours before |
Worth asking on the booking form: Any allergies or sensitivities? · Pregnant or breastfeeding?
Reflexology#
Short, repeatable treatments where the same client comes fortnightly and books several ahead.
| Duration | 40 or 60 minutes |
|---|---|
| Minimum notice | 4 hours |
| Buffer | 10 minutes after |
| Location | In person |
| Payment | Paid in person |
| Cancellation policy | Full refund 12 hours before |
Reiki and energy work#
Sold both in person and at a distance, which are genuinely different products and need separate event types.
| Duration | 60 minutes |
|---|---|
| Minimum notice | 12 hours |
| Location | In person, or video for distance sessions |
| Payment | Paid online |
| Cancellation policy | Full refund 24 hours before |
Day spas#
Packages of two or three treatments run back to back, which is one long booking rather than three short ones.
| Duration | 120 to 180 minutes for a package |
|---|---|
| Minimum notice | 48 hours |
| Buffer | 20 minutes after |
| Location | In person |
| Payment | Paid online — packages are expensive enough to need a commitment |
| Cancellation policy | Full refund 72 hours before, 50% inside that |
Private sauna hire#
The room is the product, sold in fixed slots, and the heat has to be managed between groups.
| Duration | 90 minutes |
|---|---|
| Minimum notice | 2 hours |
| Buffer | 30 minutes after, to reset and clean |
| Location | In person |
| Payment | Paid online |
| Cancellation policy | Full refund 24 hours before |
Worth asking on the booking form: How many people? · First time?
The サウナ boom means weekend evening slots sell out days ahead while weekday afternoons sit empty. Different prices need different event types, since the price lives on the event type rather than the slot.
Float tanks#
A sixty-minute float needs thirty minutes either side for showering and for the water to filter, so the slot is ninety minutes whatever the website says.
| Duration | 60 minutes in the tank |
|---|---|
| Minimum notice | 4 hours |
| Buffer | 30 minutes after, for filtration |
| Location | In person |
| Payment | Paid online |
| Cancellation policy | Full refund 24 hours before |
Worth asking on the booking form: First float? · Any open cuts or recent tattoos?
Cryotherapy and recovery studios#
Very short sessions in high volume, where a ten-minute interval and a hard daily cap matter more than anything else.
| Duration | 15 minutes, offered every 15 |
|---|---|
| Minimum notice | 1 hour |
| Max bookings per day | Cap the day at what the machine can cycle through |
| Location | In person |
| Payment | Paid online, or a pass bought in person |
| Cancellation policy | No refunds inside 12 hours |
Sound baths#
Usually a group, which means a fixed start time rather than a rolling calendar of individual slots.
| Duration | 60 minutes |
|---|---|
| Minimum notice | 12 hours |
| Location | In person |
| Payment | Paid online |
| Cancellation policy | Full refund 24 hours before |
Business Box books one party per time slot, so several customers cannot sign up for the same class individually — the first booking takes the session. It fits private sessions, trials and one-to-one teaching today. See what that means for group classes. One booking, one slot
Meditation and breathwork#
A free taster session brings people in, and the paid one-to-one work follows from it.
| Duration | 30 minutes taster, 60 for a session |
|---|---|
| Minimum notice | 6 hours |
| Location | Video, or in person |
| Payment | Taster free, sessions paid online |
| Cancellation policy | Full refund 24 hours before |
